Today is potty training, day 2. I have to say that I don't think that I could be more proud of Owen. He is transitioning very very well. With that said, we are by no means out of the woods, there will be plenty of potty accidents in our future. I had a few reasons for starting right now with this whole process. 1) He is 2 yrs & 7 months old. Lots of boys don't begin to be ready until 3, but I knew Owen was ready. He is smart, communicates his wants and needs perfectly and had already been going on the potty with a fair amount of regularity. 2) For his preschool class in the Fall they have to be 100% potty trained, enough said, no exceptions 3) I am in my 2nd trimester now and I actually have the patience and energy to deal with the task. Yesterday he had 2 pee in his underwear accidents before 10 in the morning. These were because his favorite cartoon was on and he didn't want to bother missing any to go pee on the potty. He peed in his underwear and through his shorts both times but came to tell me what had happened right away. "I peed on the floor" he said. At least he came and told me though. Then all day he did great. He even peed twice in the public restroom when we went grocery shopping. Once before we started shopping and once after. He loved flushing the toilet there and washing his hands in public. In the evening last night he was playing in his bedroom and pooped in his underwear. Thank goodness it was a big solid nugget, made it easier for cleanup. Owen's biggest issue is simply sitting still long enough to go. He has ants in his pants all the time and can't wait to move on to the next task. So far here is what is working for us:
* wearing big boy underwear, no Pullups. To him, those things just feel like diapers. If he wets his pants, oh well, I will just change his undies and his shorts.
* having a travel potty to bring with us in the car, under the stroller for trips to the park and to the beach (until he is able to hold it for longer). Baby Bjorn makes a little white one that's about $10. It's small and very portable.
* using a potty ring on the big toilet but also having his little potty out and available where he can see it, like in his playroom
* not nagging him if he has to go potty every 10 minutes. Instead I pick him up and put him on the potty about once every 45 mins and ask him to "try hard to make a pee pee".
* reminding him to come tell me when he has to pee or poop and not to go in his big boy underwear
* he's still in a diaper for naps and night night. Hopefully within a few weeks I can leave him in undies for at least nap.
Yesterday was a long, exhausting day for both of us, but today I am enjoying the potty training and would almost say that I am having fun. Almost.
